Marcus Braybrooke

It was in Korea in 1991 that I first met Leonard Swidler, although I knew of him through his writings. We had both been asked by the Won Buddhists to a conference to see how the international interfaith organisations could facilitate dialogue between people in North and South Korea. At the time any contact was punishable by imprisonment. I was at once aware of Leonard's warm friendliness and his immediate recognition of the key issues in any discussion.

Soon afterwards when I was visiting friends at the Temple of Understanding in New York, Leonard invited me to visit him at Temple University. A friend drove me, but we were much delayed and I was worried at being so late. Leonard at once made us welcome and re-arranged his afternoon without any apparent fuss.

I have particularly valued Leonard's great contribution to improving Christian-Jewish relations and I often refer students to his contribution to Bursting the Bonds. I admire his world-wide work for ecumenical and interfaith friendship and I appreciate the support he has given through The Journal of Ecumenical Studies to our efforts at the International Interfaith Centre in Oxford to encourage co-operation between international interfaith organisations. It has been an honour to serve as an Associate Editor of this remarkable journal. Leonard has also been one of the great advocates of a Global Ethic and he continues to challenge us all to work for its implementation.

I am happy to send Leonard and Arlene my best wishes for their 75th birthdays.
