I have known Professor Leonard Swidler for many years through his extensive publications and one telephone conversation. Though I have never met him in person, I have met him through the printed and spoken word, which tells me a great deal about a man who understands the fundamental human quest for ultimate meaning; a man who is sympathetic and empathetic, insightful and respectful, sensitive and scholarly in dealing with humanity's diverse pathways that promise the fulfillment of that fundamental quest.
As founder and editor of Journal of Ecumenical Studies, Professor Swidler has provided a global forum for ongoing scholarly discussion on religious diversity, understanding, and tolerance which are of paramount importance in our present milieu. This journal is a timely mouthpiece on the themes of interfaith dialogue and ecumenism, as well as a compass in so far as it points to the future with reference to the future of religious pluralism in a world that is so factionalized.
My admiration for Professor Swidler's work is expressed, to some extent, in my article entitled: "A Swidlerian and Jain Prolegomenon to Dialogue", Journal of Ecumenical Studies, Vol. XXXIV, No. 4, p. 531-550, 1997.
It is with utmost affection and admiration that I say, "Well done, Len; and thank you for your much valued contribution to scholarship and to the well being of humanity. Best wishes to you and Arlene for a blessed 75th birthday, and for many more to come".
