Paul Mojzes

Dear Leonard:

Since the middle 1960s you and I have become increasingly close collaborators on a very large number of projects. Meeting you has greatly influenced my career and world outlook, since you have a propensity to grab people and pull them or even push them on to new endeavors. I have never met ANYONE with sooooo many ideas as you. And so many GOOD ideas. You are always ready to look for new opportunities to bring people, religions, communities together, to heal hurts, to repair breaches, to reconcile those who are alienated. You are the prototypical American "can do" person-definitely an antidote to my Eastern European skepticism. If there is a complication, why not call country's president or a cardinal and get things ironed out? You are on email with just about the entire literate part of the world's population.

In the over forty years of working closely we did not have a single argument, though we may have occasionally exasperated each other. The main reason is that you are non-confrontational and not defensive about your ideas; if one approach doesn't work, let's try another. You have always been willing to try new approaches, new technologies, and new avenues. After all, if it hadn't been for lap-tops and miniature printers how would you be spending your time during flights (unless you were reading German-language mystery novels)?

You have a profound trust in God, without using God's name in vain. You've dealt with adversity, particularly your life partner Arlene's illness as an impetus to continue your joint vision. The Journal of Ecumenical Studies, which you jointly initiated will remain your historic legacy along with the numerous books which you authored. Beginning with Catholic-Protestant ecumenism by way of intra-Christian ecumenism, to wider ecumenism among Abrahamic faiths, and interreligious as well as interideological dialogue you have promoted all forms of positive interactions among individuals and groups. The Jewish-Christian-Muslim scholar's trialogue is certainly among the most important at this juncture. The number of projects which you initiated surely match the years of this anniversary. This reflects your visionary nature as well as your inclusivism. A statement attributed to Abraham Lincoln expressing the willingness to cooperate even with the devil when the devil is right is applicable to you. But you would not want to dwell on the devil; much more compatible with your vision is that All God's children need to be encouraged to engage in respectful, caring, dignified interaction in order to maximize happiness and well-being. For all of this you have my boundless admiration,

Your friend,

Paul Mojzes.
