Yitz Greenberg

When I think of Len and Arlene Swidler, two scenes come to mind. They are identical scenes, but they happened more than 30 years apart. They are the measure of the man and the couple.

One of the very first times that I met Len-perhaps the very first time-he came into the room with Arlene, the two of them together. She leaned on his hand for a moment. They were animated and I saw a current of affection, courtesy, kindness, attentiveness, collegiality, and love pass between them. A couple of years ago, I met Len and Arlene again together. I saw the same affection, courtesy, kindness, attentiveness, collegiality, and love. Nothing had changed between them in all these years but Arlene's illness. That is the measure of these two extraordinary people.

Over the decades, I have learned much from Len and Arlene about dialogue, listening to the other, integrity, peacemaking, and conflict resolution. But the greatest lesson is implicit in those two scenes.
